CHAPTER 14 Paul and Barnabas at Iconium

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, together they entered into the synagogue of the Jews, and spoke thus so as for [⁶to believe ³of both Jews ⁴and ⁵Hellenists ¹a great ²multitude]. 2 But the Jews having resisted persuasion, roused up and afflicted the souls of the nations against the brethren. 3 [³a fit ¹Then ⁴time ²they spent] speaking openly in the Lord, to the bearing witness to the word of his favor, granting signs and miracles to take place through their hands. 4 [⁶was split ¹And ²the ³multitude ⁴of the ⁵city]; and some were with the Jews, and some with the apostles. 5 And as there became a movement by the nations, and also of Jews with their rulers, to insult and to stone them, 6 being fully conscious, they took refuge in the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the place round about, 7 and there they were announcing good news.

A Lame Man of Lystra Healed

8 And a certain man in Lystra, disabled in the feet sat, [²lame ³from ⁴the belly ⁵of his mother ¹being], who at no time walked. 9 This one heard Paul speaking; who having gazed upon him, and seeing that [²belief ¹he had], of the one to be delivered, 10 said with a great voice, Rise upon your feet straight! And he leaped up and walked.

The Lycaonians Deify Paul and Barnabas

11 And the multitudes beholding what Paul did, lifted up their voice in Lycaonian, saying, The gods having become like men, are come down to us. 12 And they called Barnabas -- Dia, and Paul -- Hermes, since he was the one leading by word. 13 And the priest, the one of Dia, of the one being before their city, [²bulls ³and ⁴garlands ⁵unto ⁶the ⁷vestibules ¹having brought], with the multitudes, wanted to sacrifice. 14 And having heard, the apostles Barnabas and Paul, having torn their garments, rushed into the multitude crying, 15 and saying, Men, why do you do these things? Even we [³having the same passions ¹are ⁴as you ²men], announcing good news -- for you [²from ³these ⁴vanities ¹to turn] unto the [²God ¹living], who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all the things in them; 16 who in the [²passing by ¹generations] allowed all the nations to go by their ways; 17 though indeed not without his own witness did he allow it, but doing good from heaven to you -- [²rains ¹giving], and seasons bearing fruit, filling up provision and gladness of our hearts. 18 And saying these things, [³hardly ⁴ceased ¹the ²multitudes] to not sacrifice to them.

Paul Stoned

19 [³came ¹And ⁴from ⁵Antioch ⁶and ⁷Iconium ²Jews]; and having persuaded the multitudes, and having stoned Paul, they dragged him outside the city thinking him to have died. 20 [⁴having encircled ¹But ⁵him ²the ³disciples], having risen up, he entered into the city. And the next day he went forth with Barnabas unto Derbe. 21 And having announced good news in that city, and having discipled a fit amount, they returned unto Lystra, and Iconium, and Antioch, 22 staying up the souls of the disciples, appealing to them to adhere to the belief, and saying that, By many afflictions we must enter into the kingdom of God.

Elders Appointed in Every Assembly

23 And having hand picked for them elders in every assembly, having prayed with fastings, they placed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. 24 And having gone through Pisidia, they came unto Pamphylia. 25 And having spoken [³in ⁴Perga ¹the ²word], they went down unto Attalia. 26 And from there they sailed away unto Antioch, from where they were delivered up to the favor of God, for the work which they fulfilled. 27 And having arrived, and having gathered together the assembly, they announced as much as God did with them, and that he opened to the nations a door of belief. 28 And they spent time there, not a little, with the disciples.
